Career :
Started playing basketball with Atletico Welcome in Uruguay in 2001, Batista played for Atletico Welcome for two seasons and then joined Real Madrid, which loaned him to Pozuela. After joining Club de Trouville and Calpe Aguas, successively, Batista signed for Atlanta Hawks in NBA in the 2005-06 season. After spending two seasons playing in the NBA, he joined Maccabi Tel Aviv of Israel and then moved to Libertad Sunchales of Argentina in January 2009. After returning to Spain and signing with Fuenlabrada in the 2009-10 season, the Uruguayan center had some striking performance throughout the season, which helped him sign with Caja Laboral. Batista, aged 27 and the captain of the Uruguayan National Basketball Team, is the first ever Uruguayan to play in the NBA. During the 2007 Americas Basketball Championship held in Las Vegas, Batista left his mark on the Championship as a member of the Uruguayan National Team, averaging 20.8 points and 12.4 rebounds per game. He also played as the captain of the Uruguayan National Team in the Americas Championship held in Argentina earlier this year.
As a member of Caja Laboral, Batista appeared in a total of 10 games in the last season’s Turkish Airlines Euroleague, averaging 8.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists. Batista won a silver medal as a member of the Uruguayan National Team in the South America Basketball Championship in 2006, a bronze medal in the same Championship in 2010, and also helped his team rank third in the 2007 Panamerican Games. As a member of the Uruguayan National Team, he also appeared in the Americas Championships held in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011.
